COVID-19: Buying Beer During A Quarantine

As we continue to learn more about COVID-19 and ways to reduce and mitigate the spread and impact of the disease, we’ve also been hit with some new rules that affect our day-to-day lives.

In Seattle, this includes:

  • No large social gatherings
  • No frequenting bars/restaurants
  • Social distancing

Other cities and states (California, New York, and New Jersey, to name a few) are following similar restrictions. Yes, these restrictions suck, but it’s in EVERYONE’S best interest to follow these new rules.

And now for a ray of hope: you can continue to drink beer during these trying times!

Here are some tips for getting beer and staying safe during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Support Local

Craft breweries have done so much for us beer drinkers. Sure, every now and then someone decides to make a 10% stout with cookie dough mix, but for the most part craft breweries have given us access to saisons, new styles like the revolutionary hazy IPA, and some quick one-offs that I miss (Brut IPAs).

So, how can you support local while adhering to local laws and social distancing?

Check Social Media

Breweries and taprooms have social media accounts, and they’re updating patrons on how you can continue to get that good good while continuing to be a good Samaritan!

Craft breweries and taprooms are regularly updating their hours and providing specifics on how you can buy locally sourced and produced beer. Give some local guys a follow and stay informed.

Supporting local craft breweries helps people keep their jobs, keep money in the local economy, and promote more wonderful beer innovations in the future.

Get Beer Shipped To Your Door

We live in the 21st century folks, and that means beer to your door!

Online sales and fulfillment promote a safer way to buy and sell goods during a pandemic. This reduces human contact which, during these times, is for the better.

Fortunately, there are businesses created specifically for sending alcohol straight to your door! Saucey, one such business, sells every type of alcohol and ships it to your door. Right now, new Saucey users can save $5 on their first order and get free shipping.

Another business, Tavour, is based in Seattle and ships craft beer to people around the world. I don’t know any neat signup deals, but I’ve used Tavour for a few years and love the results!

Finally, booze-starved quarantiners (like me) can get just about anything from Drizly. Folks can get $5 off their first order here — that means that, combined with Saucey, people can get $10 in free booze, delivered during a quarantine! Not bad.

Stay Safe and Be Smart!

Absolutely NOTHING is more important than being safe and smart! I get being stuck inside. I get how much it makes me want beer. Yes, we can support local and get what we want (thank god), but don’t make bad decisions along the way.

Here are some quick tips:

  • WASH YOUR HANDS! You’ve already heard this, but it bears repeating.
  • DON’T SHARE DRINKS. You wouldn’t want to like your hands, so don’t lick a glass, can, cup, or anything that’s touched someone else’s mouth without a good rinse with soap and hot water.
  • DON’T DRINK TOO MUCH. Seriously, if you have to get admitted to the ER because of alcohol poisoning then you’re just making things worse. Also, drinking inhibits your decision making skills (gasp!), and we could all use those right around now.
  • CLEAN SURFACES. Beer touches distributors hands, goes on counter, touches your hand, touches your counter…you get the picture. Play it safe and disinfect your flat surfaces.
  • CLEAN YOUR CELLPHONE. Not beer related, but think about how often you touch your phone after touching everything else. Give that guy a good wipe down.
