I’m all about trying new beer styles, and this one falls under the “drink it for breakfast category.” 21st Amendment, a brewery I’ve written about in the past, is releasing a brand new brew that combines my two favorite beverages: beer and coffee. This one combines 21st Amendment’s IPA knowhow with Peet’s tasty Ethiopian Super Natural. I’ve tried PBR’s coffee drink (more on that another time) and this one promises to be better. At least, I assume it is because Peet’s is my go-to coffee brand. In any case, you can find out everything you need to know in the press release below. 21st Amendment Brewery and Peet’s CoffeeCollaborate for Limited-Edition 1966 Coffee IPA National Release in Nearly 30 States of West Coast IPA Brewed with Ethiopian Super NaturalEMERYVILLE, California — January 29, 2020 — Two iconic San Francisco Bay Area craft beverage purveyors, 21st Amendment Brewery and Peet’s Coffee, team up for 1966 Coffee IPA (6.8% ABV, 50 IBUs), a first-time collaboration beer to celebrate the region’s rich history as a leader of innovation and culture. The limited-edition offering will be released nationally across 28 states starting February 1, 2020. (BEER LOCATOR). Part of the 21st Amendment’s acclaimed “Insurrection Series,” the beer is handcrafted with Peet’s Ethiopian Super Natural and comes in 12-ounce cans of six-packs and draft. In 1966, the Bay Area was a hive of activity surrounding the experimental music scene with its swirly rock poster art, Vietnam War protests, and civil rights marches. In the midst of this, an unassuming immigrant named Alfred Peet opened his coffeebar at the corner of Walnut and Vine in Berkeley and changed the way Americans, and the world, thought about coffee. Today, the 21st Amendment brewery in San Leandro, Calif. is a hop, sip, and why not some more hops, from the Peet’s Roastery in Alameda. It was only a matter of time before the two Bay Area pioneers came together to brew a classic Bay Area collaboration beer for the masses to enjoy. 1966 Coffee IPA pours a pale gold with tight white bubbles, aromas of fruity blueberries and bright citrus notes from Columbus, Citra, Amarillo, and Centennial hops. The accent of rich coffee is balanced with malt structure and defined bitterness all giving this West Coast IPA a phenomenal flavor profile. “Rather than the traditional dark beer with coffee, we wanted to have fun with the melding of hops and coffee, paying attention to the coffee varietal and manipulating the roast level to nudge the subtle flavors from the bean for an incredibly unique IPA,” says Shaun O’Sullivan (Co-Founder and Brewmaster, 21st Amendment). “Working closely with Peet’s Roastmaster, Doug Welsh, we settled in on Peet’s Ethiopian Super Natural with its lemon, bergamot, and blueberry characteristics perfectly complementing the hop flavors.” “Don’t expect dark roast,” said Doug Welsh (Roastmaster, Peet’s Coffee). “We iterated every roast style imaginable, with a target profile of maltiness — matching the beer — a kaleidoscope of floral aromatics and the piquant acidity and glacé citron of exceptional Ethiopia. Hops, meet your coffee cousin.” Peet’s Ethiopian Super Natural Coffee is incorporated several ways in the brew, including “dry-hopping” with whole beans, for an IPA that is truly groovy. With can and package artwork developed by 21st Amendment’s in-house designer Ben Kinzer, the design for 1966 Coffee IPA nods to popular 1960s Bay Area psychedelic rock poster art. Past and present Peet’s Roastmasters, including Alfred Peet himself, along with other fun references, are creatively depicted. As part of the brewery’s “Insurrection Series,” the brewers and design team alike flex their ingenuity with 1966 Coffee IPA to create a golden coffee IPA packaged with the heart and soul for which the Bay Area is renowned.

Hey! Been a while. More posts to come, I promise. In the meantime, Boochcraft is officially coming to the PNW! Woohoo You can check out their official press release below. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE We’re Brightening Up the Pacific Northwest, One Booch at a Time Announcing the Arrival of Boochcraft Hard Kombucha in Oregon and Washington this Summer San Diego, Calif. (July 24, 2019) ― Boochcraft, makers of organic handcrafted hard kombucha and one of the fastest growing breweries on the West Coast, is stoked to announce its launch in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) this summer. Each of the brand’s vibrant flavors ‒ available in 22-ounce bottles,12-ounce cans, and on tap ‒ will hit stores, bars, and restaurants beginning the last week of July. “We have been striving for expansion into PNW basically since we started the company over three years ago, so this is an exciting time,” said Adam Hiner, Co-founder of Boochcraft. “Something we love about the people of PNW is their health-forward and eco-conscious lifestyle. They inherently look for clean, sustainable, and delicious products, and that’s exactly what we’re all about.” Leader in the booming better-for-you alcohol category, Boochcraft offers something you can feel good about drinking in place of so many other alcoholic beverage options on the market. The mission-driven brand maintains the highest standards at its core, including steadfast transparency, a devotion to sustainability, and commitment to sourcing only organic ingredients directly from farms. Every blend contains all of the traditional health benefits of its low alcohol counterpart but with a seven percent alcohol by volume (ABV) punch. Using only Certified Organic ingredients, Fair Trade sugar, and fruit juices freshly pressed in-house, Boochcraft sets the bar for what gluten-free, vegan, and gut-healthy alcohol can be. In addition to a soon-to-be announced regional special release, Boochcraft’s much-adored flavors landing in PNW this summer are: “PNW is as craft-competitive as you get,” said Todd Kent, Co-founder and CEO of Boochcraft. “We are privileged to be working with distribution companies with the know-how and reputation to put us on the map within the region’s discerning craft and culinary scenes.” Together with leading distributors Bigfoot Distributing of Central Oregon, NW Beverages of Western Washington, and Sound Beverage of Bellingham, Boochcraft will be available in select retail locations in Central Oregon beginning late-July, and throughout Seattle mid-August. This fall, the rollout will continue into Portland. “Our team is obsessed with the incredibly rich cultures of Oregon and Washington, and we find that we uphold similar values,” added Adam. “We can’t wait to share Boochcraft with this new territory.” Sustainability and community are fundamental parts of the brand’s mission and purpose. Inside the brewery, the team composts all of the juice and tea scraps, and is committed to finding innovative ways to conserve resources and limit waste. Boochcraft’s composting efforts are unparalleled with 171,000+ pounds composted last year and 500,000+ pounds set to be composted in 2019. This helps extend the life of landfills, reduces synthetic fertilizers, and, ultimately, makes for a happier planet. A proud member of 1% For the Planet, Boochcraft gives back one percent of gross sales to nonprofits that promote sustainable food systems. Last year, the company co-founded a program called Farm to Families that is dedicated to bringing fresh regenerative produce to underserved families. Retailers include Whole Foods Market, BevMo!, Sprouts, Raley’s, Safeway, and thousands of independent grocery stores, bottle shops, bars, and restaurants.

Every now and then, something new pops and I’m like, “wow!” So here’s some of that: intentionally boozy kombucha (we’re talking 7% ABV here, folks) that’s in cans. If you read this blog then you know I’m all about trying new things, so I’m personally pretty excited to see how this “booch” is. Hey, I may even share my opinion (something I don’t do often)! Plus, I’ve learned a little about kombucha. For example, it’s brewed! Here’s a picture of their brewery: There they are. In any case, check out the official press release for Boochcraft’s 4 new 12 oz cans (2 new flavors, 2 classics) coming to a West Coast city near you. The Happiest Buzz on Earth Now Available in Cans and New Flavors Leading High Alcohol Kombucha Brand Pushes Innovation in Newly Opened Brewery San Diego, Calif. The cans, available in four unique flavors, will hit store shelves in major grocers and beverage retailers throughout the majority of the West Coast beginning April 10th. “We are very excited to announce the launch of cans. Simply put, it’s where the industry is going,” said Adam Hiner, co-founder and chief marketing officer of Boochcraft. “Not only are they recyclable and uphold our sustainability standards, cans are light, portable and familiar to consumers. Using only certified organic ingredients, it is gluten-free, raw, vegan, contains living probiotics and is sure to please any health-focused individuals who still want to enjoy a little bubbly buzz. “What better way to fill our cans than with our two bestsellers and two new flavor-forward combinations aimed to inspire, enliven and satisfy our current customers and attract new ones,” added Hiner. The freshly canned lineup includes: (New!) Orange Pomegranate Beet – Robust pomegranate is melded with slightly sweet, lightly tart oranges and complimented with earthy beet root and a delicate bloom of savory rosemary. (New!) Grapefruit Hibiscus Heather – Sweet yet biting grapefruit juice colored delicately pink with hibiscus adds a deep, rich cranberry backbone while supplying a subtle strawberry finish. Ginger Lime Rosehips – Spicy fresh pressed ginger juice and lime juice are paired with bright, zesty rosehips. An additional 4,500 square feet will be utilized as office and multipurpose space where you can enjoy a boozy kombucha party…and the day after. Sustainability and community are core parts of Boochcraft’s mission and values. In the brewery, the brewers compost all of the juice and tea scraps, source produce from local California farms and are committed to finding innovative ways to conserve resources and limit their waste. The company gives back one percent of gross sales to nonprofits that promote sustainable food systems and even helped create a program called Farm to Families that is dedicated to bringing fresh regenerative produce to underserved families.

In the past, I’ve talked about how much I enjoy 21st Amendment. I’ve used their beer as an example of a low-calorie beer that doesn’t suck, and I proved that drinking their Brew Free Or Die is a more efficient way to get buzzed than drinking cheap beer. Well, 21st Amendment is back (even though they never left)! Last year, they released the Tasty IPA, a 21st Amendment collab with renowned homebrewer Mike “Tasty” McDole. The beer was good – so good that they’ve brought it back. Check out the bitchin artwork and full press release below. Images via 21st Amendment Brewery San Leandro, Calif. … Last year, 21st Amendment Brewery partnered up with homebrewer extraordinaire, Mike “Tasty” McDole, to collaborate on a delicious, limited-release IPA. The beer came and went far too fast so the brewery decided to bring it back for good. Releasing in six-packs, 15-packs and 19.2oz cans, Tasty IPA returns this September through March 2019 – though it may look a little different than you remember. “The original artwork featured McDole laying in a bed of hops, which inspired the direction for Benjamin Franklin, a man who was an advocate for homebrewers,” said Nico Freccia, co-founder of 21st Amendment Brewery. “This new design fits perfectly into our brand portfolio and we are excited for its permanent place as our fall to winter seasonal.” Derived from test batches of McDole’s own homebrew recipe, this 6.8%, gold-colored IPA is the perfect beer to have on-hand when you have history to make. With bright, fresh flavors and aromas of hops, tropical stone fruits and a hint of spiciness, it will be difficult to have just one. “If you like hops, and you love IPA, this is the beer for you,” said Shaun O’Sullivan, co-founder and Brewmaster of 21st Amendment. “We used Calypso, Ekuanot and Azacca for flavoring; CTZ for bittering and Simcoe, Calypso and Ekuanot in the dry hop.” Ben Franklin once said, ‘well done is better than well said’ and this beer is sure to prove that theory. Coming into the seasonal slot as Hell or High Watermelon winds down with summer, Tasty IPA will be available in all 21A distribution markets including AK, AZ, CA, CT, DE, FL, GA, ID, IL, KY, MA, MD, ME, MN, NC, NH, NJ, NV, NY, OH, OR, PA, RI, SC, VA, VT, WA and Washington D.C. Find the beer in a location near you at http://21st-amendment.com/find-some. About 21st Amendment In 2000, Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan opened the doors to the 21st Amendment brewpub in San Francisco’s historic South Park neighborhood with Freccia managing the restaurant and O’Sullivan spearheading the brewing process. In addition to quickly becoming one of the city’s favorite pubs, 21st Amendment began expanding beyond the Bay Area by helping to pioneer the movement to canned craft beer. In 2015, they opened a Brewery & Tap Room in San Leandro where most of their beers are made and canned. Known for artistic packaging, witty names and delicious brews, 21st Amendment offers year-round selections, seasonal offerings and its Insurrection Series of small-batch, limited releases. Sold in 27 states, 21st Amendment is among the top 50 craft beer breweries in America.
